BPSC Selection Process 2026

The BPSC Combined Competitive Examination is conducted in three major stages:

Preliminary Examination → Mains Examination → Interview

Candidates have to qualify for one stage before moving to the next.

The Preliminary Examination is objective in nature and is used as a screening stage. The Mains examination requires descriptive preparation, while the final stage is the Interview.

This means that your preparation should gradually move from fact-based learning for Prelims to analytical and answer-writing skills for Mains.

BPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The Preliminary Examination consists of one General Studies paper.

PaperQuestionsMarksDuration
General Studies1501502 Hours
Total1501502 Hours

There is one-third negative marking for an incorrect answer.

Because of negative marking, candidates should develop the habit of reading questions carefully before marking an answer.

Exam Tip: Don’t try to attempt every question just for the sake of increasing attempts. Accuracy should remain a priority.

How to Prepare for BPSC Exam 2026?

A common problem among aspirants is trying to complete everything simultaneously. That usually creates unnecessary pressure.

Instead, divide your preparation into clear stages.

Step 1: Understand the Syllabus

Before starting any subject, understand exactly what you need to study.

Break large subjects into smaller sections.

For example:

History → Ancient → Medieval → Modern → Bihar History → National Movement

This makes the syllabus feel much more manageable.

Step 2: Focus on Bihar

Bihar-specific preparation deserves consistent attention.

Prepare:

  • Bihar History
  • Bihar Geography
  • Bihar Economy
  • Bihar Polity
  • Bihar’s role in the freedom movement
  • Bihar Current Affairs
  • Important state issues

Don’t treat Bihar GK as something to be completed at the end.

Step 3: Prepare Current Affairs Daily

Spend some time every day on Current Affairs.

At the end of each week, revise what you studied.

At the end of each month, revise the complete month’s notes.

This is much easier than trying to remember several months of Current Affairs together.

Step 4: Combine Prelims and Mains Preparation

Don’t prepare for Prelims and Mains as two completely separate examinations.

For example, while studying the freedom movement:

For Prelims: Learn important facts, events and personalities.

For Mains: Understand causes, impact, different phases and Bihar’s contribution.

This saves time and creates a stronger understanding of the subject.

BPSC 90-Day Preparation Plan

Days 1–30: Build the Foundation

Focus on:

  • Indian History
  • Bihar History
  • Indian Geography
  • Bihar Geography
  • Indian Polity
  • Basic Economy
  • General Science
  • General Hindi

Start Current Affairs from the first day.

Days 31–60: Strengthen Your Preparation

  • Science & Technology
  • Current Affairs
  • Mental Ability
  • GS preparation
  • Essay writing

Start solving previous-year questions regularly.

Days 61–75: Practice Phase

Now increase your practice.

Solve:

  • Previous-year questions
  • Topic-wise MCQs
  • Sectional tests
  • Full-length Prelims tests
  • Mains answer-writing questions
  • Data interpretation questions
  • Essay topics

Keep a separate record of your mistakes.

Days 76–90: Final Revision

The last phase should focus mainly on revision.

Revise:

  • Bihar GK
  • History
  • Geography
  • Polity
  • Economy
  • Science
  • Current Affairs
  • Important facts
  • Short notes
  • Previous mistakes

Take mock tests regularly and analyse them properly.

BPSC Daily Study Timetable

A candidate studying for around 7–8 hours can consider a routine like this:

Subject/ActivityTime
Bihar GK1 Hour
History & Geography1.5 Hours
Polity & Economy1.5 Hours
General Science1 Hour
Current Affairs45 Minutes
Mental Ability45 Minutes
MCQs/PYQs1 Hour
Revision30 Minutes

You don’t have to follow these exact timings. Adjust the routine according to your available study time.

The important thing is to maintain a balance between new learning, practice and revision.

Common Mistakes BPSC Aspirants Should Avoid

Ignoring Bihar-Specific Topics

Bihar-related topics appear across several sections, so they should be part of your regular preparation.

Preparing Only for Prelims

Mains preparation should begin well before the Prelims result.

Reading Current Affairs Without Revision

Reading is only the first step. Revision is what helps you retain information.

Ignoring Answer Writing

Mains requires clear and structured answers. Start practising early.

Leaving Essay Preparation for the End

Writing improves with practice, so don’t wait until the last month.

Taking Mock Tests Without Analysis

After every mock, identify why your answers were wrong.

Changing Study Material Frequently

Constantly switching books and notes wastes time. Select useful material and revise it properly.
